IOCs suffer $27.8bn loss

Nigeria’s oil projects threatened as IOCs suffer $27.8bn loss Several major oil and gas projects in Nigeria may suffer further delays as international oil companies operating in the country saw their financials take a dive in the second quarter of this year. The slump in oil prices caused by the coronavirus pandemic has forced many companies, including IOCs  to slash their capital budgets and suspend some projects. The global oil benchmark, Brent crude, plunged to as low as $15.98 per barrel in April, its lowest since June 1999. It traded around $44 per barrel on Monday. Royal Dutch Shell said last Thursday that it posted a loss of $18.4bn in the second quarter of this year, compared to a profit of $3.5bn in the same period of 2019. The company warned that the outlook for oil demand continued to be uncertain, saying it had cut its exploration drilling plans for this year from 77 wells to just 22. Shell cut its capital spending budget for this year in March from around $25bn to $20b...

WHO alerts to measles outbreak in Nigeria, others ‘Africa recorded 900% rise in cases within 12 months’ The World Health Organisation (WHO) has alerted to major and ongoing outbreak of measles in Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Philippines, South Sudan, Sudan and Thailand. The latest preliminary reports, published yesterday by the WHO, warned that measles outbreak continues to spread rapidly around the world with millions of people globally at risk of the disease. According to the health body, in the first six months of 2019, reported measles cases are the highest they have been in any year since 2006, with outbreak straining health care systems, and leading to serious illness, disability, and deaths in many parts of the world.
Obiano earmarks N6 billion for an international cargo airport The Anambra State Government has earmarked N6 billion for the construction of the Anambra State International Cargo Airport at Umueri, near Awka, the state capital. Governor Willie Obiano made the disclosure at the presentation of the state 2020 budget to the state’s assembly on yesterday in Awka. He announced that a total of N22.2 billion was estimated for the construction of roads and bridges, while N6 .98 billion was set aside for implementation of strategic initiatives in the health sector. Mr Obiano, who later hosted stakeholders at the Government Lodge in Amawbia, near Awka, said his administration decided to invest in the airport to actualise the promise he made during 2017 governorship campaign.
Ghana To Deport 25 Nigerians The Ghana Immigration Service is set to deport 25 Nigerian ladies arrested in the Bono East Region of the country over prostitution. The Regional Commander of Immigration Service Department in the Bono East Region, Chief Superintendent Enoch Annor Abrokwa, told journalists that the girls will be deported to Nigeria as soon as the process was completed. Their arrest followed the directive of the Regional Minister, Hon. Kofi Amaokohere to security personnel to rid the region of unlawful elements. Chief Superintendent Abrokwa said there was a renewed campaign to weed out foreigners engaged in unlawful acts in the territory. He said the prostitutes were arrested in the Nkoranza South and Kintampo South of the region when officers of the Immigration Service and the Ghana Police Service the area. “Our men raided some notorious spots in the towns around 12a.m and 3a.m on the fateful day and picked about 25 prostitutes, all Nigerians,” he said....
Enugu state governor saves agrarian community: Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has inaugurated the 8.8km reconstructed portion of a road abondoned 36 years ago in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of the state. The 8.8km Ikem-Eha Amufu-Nkalagu Road road, which was inaugurated yesterday, was reconstructed for the people of the agrarian community as a gateway to the North, through Obollo-Afor connecting Ebonyi State through Nkalagu. The road is one of the hitherto abandoned critical infrastructure and legacy projects in the rural areas, executed by Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration in line with its rural development policy. The road provides access to the Nigercem Factory at Nkalagu that used to be the mainstay of the economy and tourist attraction to the Eastern Nigeria.
